Lake Balaton

Balaton is our world-famous natural treasure and is also the largest lake in Hungary. On the sunny slopes of the Balaton highlands many grapes and other kinds of fruit are grown. Its pleasant weather in the summertime, and the view of sailboats blown by the northwest winds in the gorgeous landscape have an absolutely relaxing effect on people arriving for a vacation. The eastern basin is separated from the rest of the lake by the Tihany peninsula. The southern shore of the river is shallower, the northern side is famous for the Badacsony wine region.

Balaton and its surroundings are Hungary’s biggest tourist attractions besides Budapest. In 2004 it won the title of Our Heritage – Somogy’s Treasure. There are thermal spas and hot springs all around it. The Kékszalag International Sailing Competition is organized every year on the lake.

The region awaits visitors throughout the year with its vineyards, seasonally with golf courses, sailboats, adventure parks and other extreme sports facilities, picturesque landscapes, castles and mansions.
